Philosopher Daniel Dennett will deliver the 47th annual Potter Memorial Lecture, hosted by the Department of Philosophy, the evening of September 11, 2008 (time and venue to be announced).
Dennett, the author of Breaking the Spell (2006), Freedom Evolves (2003), Darwin's Dangerous Idea (1995), and more than 300 articles, is Austin B. Fletcher Professor of Philosophy and co-director of the Center for Cognitive Studies at Tufts University. His research focuses on philosophy of mind, philosophy of biology, and cognitive science.
He has received 2 Guggenheim fellowships, a Fulbright fellowship, and a fellowship at the Center for Advanced Studies in Behavioral Science. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1987.
The Potter Lecture is named for Frank Fraser Potter, a founding member of the WSU Department of Philosophy, and was originally endowed with an anonymous gift from a former student of Potter. The lecture brings an internationally known philosopher to Washington State University each year. Recent Potter Lectures have been delivered by Bernard Rollin, Harry Frankfurt, Linda Martín Alcoff, and Noam Chomsky.
