Each semester, thousands of students, faculty and staff
participate in various activities offered by the
intramural sports program at Washington State
University. Campus champions are determined from a
single elimination tournament at the end of league
play. For intramural basketball, however, teams can
take their skills and compete at a higher level against
other schools at extramural tournaments around the
country. Luckily for WSU, the 5th Annual Northwest
Regional Basketball Tournament is quickly becoming a
tradition for University Recreation.
Every year, regional basketball and flag football
tournaments are hosted by various intramural
departments at colleges and universities around the
country. There is even a regional dodge ball tournament
hosted by Rowan University in New Jersey. The winners
of these regional tournaments, and other at-large
teams, then convene at a national tournament to
determine the ultimate intramural champion.
Washington State University and the University of Idaho
were selected by the National Intramural-Recreational
Sports Association (NIRSA) as one of seven regional
basketball tournament sites this year. Each regional
winner receives a bid to the National Intramural
Basketball Championship hosted by The Ohio State
University April 18-20. Students from across the
Northwest will voyage to Pullman February 29-March 3 to
compete at the highest level in hopes of earning a bid.
If your team is interested in competing this year, make
sure you check out the tournament's website at
http://www.urecregional.wsu.edu/basketball for more
information. Register by February 21 to receive a
discount on pricing and a guaranteed spot in the
tournament.
