Time Management

By: Jung-Eun (Jenny) Lee, M.A

Feeling antsy this summer? Having trouble accomplishing some of those summer goals you set up during the year? Perhaps you have some free time on your hands and are trying to figure out a good plan of action or you have so many important goals you would like to achieve. It's hard to manage it all! It's time to develop your time management skills. Whether it's summer time or Fall semester, here are some tips to help you get the most out of your time.

Advantages of Time Management

• Provides more free time!
• Motivates and initiates achieving goals
• Reduces avoidance
• Eliminates cramming for exams or staying up all night to meet a work deadline
• Reduces anxiety

Five Steps to Successful Time Management

  1. Set specific academic and personal goals for yourself. These goals can be general, or specific, long term, or short term. Sometimes it helps to write down some of each!

  2. Create a calendar for the month, marking down major events and deadline that you don't want to miss!

  3. Create a weekly schedule of your classes, meetings, work outs, etc

  4. Decide on specific times to work on each course and goal, and celebrate when you achieve a goal!

  5. Make a to-do list for each day (but when you're making lists for your lists, you've gone too far!)
