Have you ever experienced the uncomfortable and uncontrollable urge to move your legs? If so, you may suffer from restless leg syndrome, a neurological sleep disorder that causes an uncomfortable urge to move the legs, especially when resting. Check out the following symptoms to see if you may be one of the many people who suffer from this syndrome.
-
Usually strikes when a person lies down or sits for a prolonged period of time; for example, while driving, watching TV or a movie or sitting at a desk for work.
-
Symptoms tend to follow a set daily cycle with evening and night hours being more troublesome than mornings.
-
You may find it difficult to fall asleep because of the strong urge to walk or do other activities to relieve the sensations in the legs.
-
Researchers don't know the cause, many believe deficiencies of iron or other nutrients; consumption of alcohol or caffeine may also trigger it.
Recommended relief
-
Avoid caffeine and alcohol.
-
Moving the legs, walking, rubbing or massaging the legs, doing knee bends can bring relief at least briefly.
-
Practice good sleep habits such as going to bed at the same time every night and getting up at the same time each morning.
-
Take a multivitamin to prevent a nutrient deficiency.
-
Try taking a hot bath.
-
In worse cases, medication could be used for treatment. Please consult your doctor.
