Hey parents, summer is right around the corner and you know what that means! The weather is nicer, the days are longer … and kids are out of school. So why not send them to camp? University Recreation is offering several different types of summer camps and classes for youth to help workout their bodies as well as their brains.
Children entering grades 1-7 are just the right age for Cougar Kids Camp. The SRC offers eight different camps, each five days long and with its own special theme, ranging from Aloha Summer week to Superhero week. Each camp is jam packed full of fun activities like swimming, rock climbing, and crafts.
If your youngsters aren't so young anymore, you might want to send them to Teen Strength Training Camp (TST). Our camp meets three days each week in June and July for two hours each day. Designed to enhance a middle school and high school athlete's performance, this camp combines cutting edge functional training with traditional strength training, and boot camps. Students will learn about nutrition, the how's and why's of strength training, and how to train to prevent injury.
Whether or not your kids attend a camp this summer, chances are they'll spend some time outside in the sun. Here are some tips for staying safe in the UV rays of summer:
-
Don't forget sunscreen. No matter what time of day or what time of year, applying sunscreen is a good habit to instill in your children. Remember to use SPF 15 or above and apply liberally to the body every several hours.
-
Wear sunglasses that protect your eyes from harmful rays.
-
Wear a hat. Hats provide shade and protect the eyes and face from the sun.
-
Dress in breathable clothes that allow air flow and cooling of your body. If you're really worried about the sun's harmful rays, there are clothing lines that make sun protection clothing. They even make kid's clothes!
-
Drink, Drink, Drink plenty of fluids.
So when you're having fun in the sun, remember what the Aussies say: Slip it, Slap it and Slop it. That means: Slip on a pair of sunglasses; slap on a hat; and slop on the sunscreen… and protect yourself and your family from the sun.
