Have you ever been at the pool or lake in the summer, lounging around, wishing you could be a better swimmer?  There are many opportunities in the Aquatics program, at University Recreation to hone your swimming skills.  Here are some opportunities to learn new skills while having a great time at the pool!

Adult Swimming Lessons

Beginner
These lessons are for adults wanting to be comfortable and active in the water.  Participants will learn how to float, submerge completely, propel themselves through the water on both the front and the back, and the basic front and back crawl strokes.  The goal is to be able to swim a specified length (25 yards) and feel comfortable in deep water. The class is designed to prepare participants not only to experience swimming, but to participate in various recreational water activities.

Intermediate
This class is for the well-adjusted swimmer.  Participants should be able to swim a length of the pool using any style and tread or float in deep water for one minute.  The general goals include increased proficiency in the basic strokes, ability to lead into swimming regularly with a Masters group, development of more advanced strokes and turns, greater understanding of safety, and the ability to use water as a medium for recreation and fitness.

Masters Swimming
Were you a swimmer in high school?  Always wanted to change up your workout routine for some different cardio?  The focus of Masters Swimming is to provide structured fitness swimming workouts. These workouts differ from a traditional open lap swim in that on-deck coaching is provided.  This instruction includes:
·    Stroke technique and development
·    Set design
·    Videotaping and analysis
The coach will adapt the workout to the participant’s needs, while keeping the group as a whole moving to achieve common goals.  This class is perfect for those that want to cross-train for fitness, improve their swimming ability, or train for a triathlon or other swimming competitions.  Workouts are provided in the early morning and in the late afternoons.  Participants may register for a morning or afternoon session.

Junior Masters
This is an add-in to the general afternoon Masters Session that is open to ages 14 and up.  It’s a great way for youth wanting to swim for fitness or prepare for their high school swim teams to increase skill level and build into their season.  Junior Masters swim is joined with the adult Masters, so it’s a great way for parents and their young adults to do something together!

Youth Swimming Lessons

Learn to Swim!
Instruction is lead by a certified Water Safety Instructor. Classes are taught according to the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim curriculum. Participants may enroll in Level I—Level VI classes, depending on level of water experience and skill. Parents are asked to choose the approximate level of their child’s swimming prior to class. Parent/Child classes are also available.

Cougar Kids Camp Swimming Lessons
Add a little extra to your camper's experience by enrolling them in instructional swim time after camp! Please register for swim lessons on the aquatics registration form and indicate that your child is also registered for camp.  Instructors will pick up the campers and escort them to lessons.

Private Lessons
Need some extra help with your stroke?  Just learning how to swim? Certified Water Safety Instructors are on hand for private lessons at all levels, from beginning to competitive. This is the perfect way for people with busy schedules to tailor their swim experience, or prepared to participate in an ongoing class.  Like to swim with a friend?  Choose the Two Participant Package and develop your skills together!
