This summer why not ditch the car and grab a bike or walking shoes to help improve your health and the environment by participating in the Sole Power program, offered through University Recreation. Community members, students, faculty, spouses, or partners are encouraged to become involved.
Sole Power encourages increasing daily physical activity and minimizing creation of greenhouse gases through the use of alternative modes of transportation. It is a self directed program, allowing individuals to track "miles" for car pooling, bus travel, walking, running, biking, and more.
Once a member, participants can feel the benefits offered through the program that include improved health and wellbeing, a support team, education opportunities, financial returns, and feeling good about positively impacting the environment.
Brad Stewart, Coordinator of Wellbeing, said one of the biggest benefits of the Sole Power program is the information and resources that participants will have available to them. These include the Brown Bag Lunch and Learn seminars that will teach about topics that include Living Green, Benefits of Walking, Green Transportation For All, and more.
Participants will receive a Sole Power t-shirt and pedometer so they can show their commitment and track their miles. Participants will also receive awards for meeting their goals such as reusable water bottles, gift certificates and free massages. "The purpose of this program is really to inspire others to get outside and use other modes of transportation," said Stewart. "Anyone can do it, no matter what your fitness level or ability to use other modes of transportation is. Because it is self directed, participants get to choose what level they would like to participate at."
The cost of the program is only $8 for students and $10 for non-students. Session 1 runs May 13 through June 24 and Session 2 runs July 8 through August 13.
