Community Partnerships
Partners in Building a Strong
Community -
YMCA
Sarah Hanks,
Director for the
YMCA
The WSU Greek Community has a long history of giving back to the Pullman community. As you look to help strengthen the Greek Community & your individual chapter, the YMCA at WSU, another campus-based organization committed to building strong communities, would like to partner with you in an effort to continue providing innovative programs and services to youth, families, and individuals with diverse abilities in Pullman. The YMCA at WSU is celebrating 115 years as a student organization at WSU, and continues to strive to develop civically engaged student leaders and encourage involvement from those we serve in building strong kids, strong families and communities. Over the past year, the YMCA at WSU has partnered with the WSU Greek community in the execution of a very successful Greek Week book drive and have enjoyed the diversity that fraternity men and sorority women volunteers have brought to YMCA programs. For all you do, we thank you!
Knowing the value of your service and the dedication you have to the Pullman community, we would like to take this time to outline ways the YMCA at WSU can continue to serve and be served by the Greek Community. As you look forward to a successful academic year and consider the many ways to get current undergraduate members involved in the community, here’s a countdown to the Top Five ways to get involved and be part of building a strong community in partnership with the YMCA at WSU.
Get Involved in Your Community
5. Tutor young scholars. The YMCA at WSU is proud to host an after school tutoring program at each of Pullman’s three elementary schools. Sign up as a group or individually.
4. Get exercise. Encourage your chapters to participate in our second annual Summit Therapy Pumpkin Dash on October 3, 2009, and help raise money to support the Whitman County Cougars and Cubs Special Olympic teams. Help us break last year’s mark of $1200.
3. Enjoy great entertainment. See the Seattle-based “Chopstix” dueling pianos put on a great show on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at the Schweitzer Event Center, and help raise funds our community programs. Contact the YMCA at WSU for ticket information.
2. Make it a tradition. Incorporate a book drive to benefit the youth enrolled in YMCA programs in future Greek Weeks. In 2009, more than 3,000 books were collected and made available for youth and their families to enjoy at the YMCA.
1. Be a good community member. Whether or not you get involved in a YMCA at WSU program, you can help us and others build a better community by being a caring neighbor, engaged citizen, and demonstrating your values, and the values of your chapter in all that you do.
Best of luck in the coming year, and be sure to call on the YMCA at WSU if we can help in any way.
