George Mount, professor in the Laboratory
for Atmospheric Research, Department of
Civil and Environmental Engineering, has
been heavily involved in the NASA Jet
Propulsion Laboratory Orbiting Carbon
Observatory satellite which will measure
precise carbon dioxide levels from space
for the first time and provide valuable
information for efforts to understand the
effects of CO2 on global warming.

Teresa Coons, who graduated in December
with a BS in civil engineering,
obliterates the inaccurate stereotype of
engineers sitting in a cubicle designing
widgets. During her time at WSU, Coons
has traveled from Mississippi to Mexico,
helping in humanitarian efforts. She
plans to attend graduate school to study
sustainable and environmental engineering
practices for third world environments
and hopes eventually to travel the world,
providing engineered systems to improve

$800,000 National Science Foundation
grant for the acquisition and development
of an atmospheric chemistry mobile
